Dental Plans are not all the same
If you are looking for dental coverage, you will see two types of dental plans. One type is a dental discount plan, and the other type is dental insurance. Dental insurance may come with copays, deductibles (amounts you pay before the insurance pays), limits (the amount the insurance will pay per year), and waiting periods for pre-existing conditions. Dental insurance also costs more than a dental discount plan because it is, well, insurance.

Note that if you are offered a dental insurance plan with NO DEDUCTIBLE, then you can bet it will only pay up to a specifiied limit. If the plan has a deductible and copays, it probably will allow you a higher limit, or pay a percentage of costs. Almost all dental insurance plans have waiting periods for expensive things like crowns, though they may pay right away for check ups. It is really important for you to have an idea of what you are buying so you don’t get surprised.
DENTAL DISCOUNTS CAN HELP!
I would almost never say this in the health insurance world, but in the dental world, when you really think about all of your dental expenses PLUS the cost of coverage, you may end up spending less with a quality dental discount plan. For one thing, dental discount plans are usually much cheaper - some start at less than 80 dollars a year - that might be a month’s premium for dental insurance. Some have the same dental networks that large insurers use. For instance, Aetna, Unicare, and other well known insurance companies offer their networks for discount plans on DentalPlans.Com.
Some of the plans offer free, or very cheap, normal maintanence like checkups and xrays, and they offer signifigant discounts of treatments from cavities to crowns!
Dental Plans usually also help with braces and orthodontics, which most dental insurance plans do not address. If dental insurance does cover orthodontics, it is usually only with an extra expensive rider added on.
Dental Plans can stand alone, or complement dental insurance
Many individuals choose a higher deductible or limited benefit dental insurance plan, and then use a dental plan to supplement it and create more savings. If you have a insurance policy that will only pay $300 for a $600 dental bill, but you can shave off 30% from the original bill - plus get free or cheap checkups, you’ve done well!
