A California woman had her health insurance plan cut off while she was going through very expensive treatments for breast cancer. She started chemotherapy, but doctors stopped treating her because her health insurance stopped paying the bills. Later, she did find treatment through a state funded program, but the emotional damage was done. This story was posted on Yahoo! News.

Now in my state it is illegal to cut off individual health insurance because of an illness, and it is also illegal to raise rates on individual health claims. I am not as familiar with the laws in California, but obviously a judge over threw the book at the health insurance company.

The 52 year old woman had $129,000 in unpaid medical bills. After awarding that amount to relieve her of that debt, the judge also awarded punitive damage and payment for emotional pain. Hopefully this will signal all health insurers that these sort of games will not be tolerated in the US.

When you buy individual health insurance make sure you don’t save pennies and lose your life savings! Look for highly rated, national major medical plans. If you need to cut premiums, consider raising your deductible a bit, but make sure you cannot be cancelled for an illness after you already have coverage.
