Affordable Health Insurance
Save on your health, car and home insurance. Raise your deductibles. As an
example, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield charges $945 a month for a
family health plan with a $100 deductible, and $357 a month for a $1,000
deductible. Do the math: In a worst-case scenario, the higher deductible
could cost a family of four an additional $1,800 in a year, which is where
it is capped. But they'll save $7,056 in premiums, and it's not likely
that every year will be a worst-case year.

Individuals who have been turned down by health insurance carriers may have a few options. The most obvious option is to find coverage with your state risk pool. This link is to the Texas State Risk Pool. Other states have similar programs. Your second option is to look for a carrier with less severe underwriting rules. For instance, some regional insurance companies provide plans with less strict underwriting than some national companies. They may also be willing to issue you an insurance company with a medical waiver on your condition, or to issue your policy with an increased rate. Of course, waiving the very medical condition you are likely to need treatment on may not seem attractive to you. Sometimes you can limit your risk with benefit policies (not insurance) that provide discounts on treatments and do not require underwriting. ALSO, be informed that some companies that waive health conditions that others don't may not be offering major medical, but what we call a mini-med or specified disease insurance plan. Look carefully at these plans. When plans specify a daily limit on hospital room charges, that is a sure sign you are not looking at a major medical plan - but a limited benefit plan. Sometimes limited benefits are the right answer for consumers, particularly those with pre-existing conditions that may be denied under major medical plans, and sometimes the premium are much cheaper. Just be sure you are aware of what your policy covers. ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU DEAL WITH A LICENSED INSURANCE AGENT, AND RESEARCH BEFORE YOU BUY! If you ask the agent a question like, IS THIS INSURANCE, and they don't want to answer the question - be very afraid! I actually checked out a company for a friend of mine, and I asked the marketer no less than 5 times if the plan was actually insurance. The salesperson finally became insulting, and I gleefully advised my friend that this would be a good company to avoid. Don't guess. Contact insurance carriers or agents to check out your options. A reputable insurance agent will tell you if they can help you, or if the state risk pool is your best option.
