Health Insurance Declined You? Here’s what to do!
Individual Health Insurance Selects Customers Based On Risk
Did you know that you can be declined for individual health insurance based on risk factors? People with certain health conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or a history of past heart disease stand a high chance of getting declined by health insurance companies. Some other risk factors can inlcude weight, what sort of work the applicant does, and even credit history!
If you have a health condition, and suddenly find yourself without health insurance, it can be very stressful. However you do have options. Each US state has a risk pool or guaranteed acceptance risk plan. You do have to meet the qualifications to be considered for the risk plan, and in some states, the premium is pretty expensive.
If you contact your state insurance department they can direct you to your state’s risk plan. A good insurance agent, especiallly one that you contacted about health insurance, should be able to help you as well. If the insurance is experienced, you are certainly not the first client that has ever been refused by individual health insurance. Do not hesitate to ask the agent for help, or spend to much time blaming the agent. They would like very applicant to get accepted, but the decision is up to the health insurance company’s underwriters.
If you do not qualify for your state risk plan, or if you simply cannot afford the premiums which may be twice as high as a regular health insurance plan in some states, you have other options. Many counties run a county hospital and county health plan. These usually have rates that are graduated on income, and so people with moderate to lower incomes have access. You will probably have a limited choice of clinics and hospitals, but at least you will have access to health insurancce.
If you have a very low income, then consider Medicaid. Medicaid usually has an HMO type of network where you must pick a primary doctor, and then get referred to services. However you will usually have access to any sort of medical care you need without payment. Some people are embarassed to seek help with Medicaid, but I would counsel anybody to swallow their pride in order to access the health care they need.
If you are shopping for health insurance, and have a health condition, don’t just assume that you will get declined! Insurance companies weigh risk factors differently, and a company underwriter will take individual situations into account. It is best to compare several plans, consult with an experienced health insurance agent, and make a health insurance application after doing a bit of shopping.
We have an Online Health Insurance Quote Form that takes about three minutes to fill out, and will return competitive quotes. At the end of the form, you will also be able to see a variety of qualified health insurance agents in your area. We think this is one of the smartest, most cost effective, and fastest ways to do insurance shopping!
