Pros and Cons of Health Insurance Plans Types
Are you shopping for a family health insurance plan or selecting your group medical at work? If you are, you may be confronted by comparing an HMO vs PPO vs HSA medical plan. The article linked in the previous sentance outlines the pros and cons of the three most common type of plan.
The basic thing to keep in mind is that the best health insurance plan for your family is not the same one that will work for all of your neighbors or coworkers. Your savings habits, risk tolerance, and flexibility in choosing your medical prodiders will determine which sort of healht insurance you should buy.
In summary, an HSA or health savings account plan works with a high deductible health insurance plan. If you are a good saver, and would like to add an extra tax deduction to your return at the end of the year, you may be a good candidate. On the other hand we do find that many families are not satisfied with their HSA/high deductible health insurance because they did not end up saving as much they needed to meet medical expenses.
On the other end, an HMO plan means you must almost always stick to the network for your care, but it provides very comprehensive coverage. You may be able to get most services with a very small copay, do not have to worry about savings payments, and can simply pick a medical provider from an online list or booklet.
A PPO plan is in the middle, and it allows you some flexibility in selecting your medical providers, and a choice of staying in the provider network for the highest coverage, or leaving the network for lower coverage. This is probably the most popular plan in the US, especially with people who need an individual health insurance plan.
Be sure and take the time to compare health insurance plans before you buy. People who know what they are signing up for in the beginning are likely to be the most satisfied when they need to use their health insurance.
