Car Insurance Increases After One Accident

I had a spotless driving record for years, but then I blew it. I backed into the tail end of a truck in a parking lot, and even though I was going about 1 mile an hour, and the damage was very minor, I was at fault. Of course, the first thing I thought of, after I made sure everybody in both cars was uninjured, was how much this minor accident would cost me in auto insurance rates.

So, how much exactly, will one accident impact auto insurance rates? Well, a few companies do give customers a break on their first claim, especially if they have driven without any claims for a few years. However, it is more normal to see a 20 percent to 40 percent increase at renewal time.

Once, many years ago, I was inolved in an accident that was not my fault. However, it did involve a large amount of property damage and the other drivers were not insured. So I had to rely on the “uninsured motorist” clause to get own company to cover repairs. The next time my policy came up for a renewal, I got a curt cancellation notice. I could not believe that treatment, and it is unusual.

Anyway, if you have had an accident, and you are worried about an auto insurance rate increase, or worse, this could be a great time to compare auto insurance rates! Young drivers car insurance rates can be especially vulnerable since they are considered a high risk group anyway.
